Understanding Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

After surgery, the right rehab makes all the difference. We focus on post-operative care for knee, hip, shoulder, and spine surgeries with a goal of getting you back stronger than before.

Post-surgical rehab is practical rebuilding. We restore movement, rebuild strength, and teach you how to load tissues safely so your body handles hiking, running, deadlifts, and dance again.

You won’t get 10‑minute check-ins or generic stretches. You get a clear 3‑phase plan and 60 minutes of one-on-one care with a Doctor of Physical Therapy who understands athletes and active adults.

Common Symptoms

  • Persistent pain or soreness around the surgical area when you move or train
  • Stiffness and limited range of motion that blocks normal movement
  • Weakness or instability when you try to load the area (squats, lunges, single‑leg tasks)
  • Swelling and sensitivity that flares with activity
  • Fear of re-injury or lack of confidence returning to sport or training
  • Compensatory pain in nearby joints (hip, low back, opposite shoulder)

Common Causes

  • Surgical trauma and inflammation that temporarily changes movement patterns
  • Muscle atrophy and loss of strength from immobilization or reduced use
  • Scar tissue and restricted joint mobility
  • Pain‑inhibition and nervous system guarding that limits load tolerance
  • Incomplete progressive loading or lack of sport-specific rehab
  • Unaddressed movement faults that shift stress to other structures

How We Treat Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

We don’t just treat symptoms. We restore capacity. Every plan starts with a 60‑minute evaluation by Dr. Sujaya Deodhar, DPT. Then we follow a 3‑phase Bulletproof Roadmap: protect and restore, rebuild strength and load, then return to performance. You keep training when it’s safe. We modify, not stop.

01

Comprehensive 60‑Minute Evaluation

Hands-on assessment of your surgery site, strength, movement patterns, and how your body compensates. We identify what’s limiting your return to activities like trail running, pickleball, or dance.

02

Phase 1 — Protect & Restore Mobility

Control swelling, restore joint motion, and reduce pain-related guarding. We use targeted manual therapy, mobility drills, and safe loading to rebuild comfort and movement.

03

Phase 2 — Strength & Load Progression

Systematic strength work to rebuild muscle, tendon, and joint tolerance. Progressive loading is tailored to your goals—deadlifts, single‑leg hikes, or on‑court quickness.

04

Phase 3 — Return to Performance & Prevention

Sport‑ or activity‑specific training to translate gains into real life. We address endurance, power, and movement quality so you can return with confidence and fewer flare‑ups.

05

Ongoing Coaching & Maintenance

A clear home program, check‑ins, and adjustments as you ramp up mileage, weight, or rehearsal time. We teach strategies to prevent setbacks and stay active long term.

What to Expect

  1. 1First visit: 60 minutes with Dr. Sujaya. We review your surgery, goals, imaging if available, and do a hands‑on exam.
  2. 2You’ll leave with a clear plan: short‑term milestones, exercise homework, and a roadmap for progress.
  3. 3Treatment is one‑on‑one. Sessions focus on hands‑on care, strength work, and movement drills you’ll use in real life.
  4. 4We reassess regularly. If something isn’t improving, we change the approach. We communicate with your surgeon or PCP when useful.
  5. 5You’ll be coached to keep training safely. We modify load and activity so you don’t have to stop everything while healing.
  6. 6We track functional milestones (e.g., single‑leg hop, depth on a squat, hike elevation) so progress is measurable and goal‑driven.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon after surgery can I start physical therapy?

Timing depends on your surgery, surgeon’s protocol, and your current status. We recommend an evaluation as soon as your surgeon clears you for movement. We’ll coordinate with your surgical team if needed.

Will physical therapy make my surgical pain worse?

You may feel temporary soreness as tissues are loaded. We prioritize safe progressions and pain‑aware loading to reduce flare‑ups. If pain increases unusually, we reassess and adjust the plan.

How do I get started?

Personalized, one-to-one care with a clear roadmap for progress.

How many visits will I need?

That varies by the type of surgery, your baseline strength, and your goals. After the evaluation we give a personalized roadmap with expected phases and milestones—not a fixed number of visits.

Can I keep training while in rehab?

Yes. Our philosophy is modify, don’t stop. We build a plan that lets you keep parts of your routine—running shorter distances, scaled lifting, or modified dance—while protecting healing tissues.

Ready to rebuild and return stronger?

Book a 60‑minute evaluation with Dr. Sujaya. We’ll map a clear recovery plan so you can get back to hiking, running, lifting, or dancing with confidence.
